Chess Pieces: Red & Ivory Elizabethan Chessmen - 5" King
The Elizabethan era, marked by the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558–1603), is often depicted by historians as the golden age of English history. The symbol of Britannia, first used in 1572, epitomizes this period as a renaissance that inspired national pride through classical ideals, international expansion, and naval victories over Spain, a rival kingdom despised by the English. Historian John Guy (1988) argues that “England was economically healthier, more expansive, and more optimistic under the Tudors” than at any time in the previous millennium.
In foreign affairs, Elizabeth strengthened England’s Protestant allies and divided her foes. She faced opposition from the pope, who refused to recognize her legitimacy, and from Spain, then at the height of its power. In 1588, the Spanish Armada, the greatest naval force of its time, attempted to invade England but was thwarted by storms and a resolute English navy.
With increasing naval dominance, Elizabeth encouraged voyages of discovery, such as Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe and Sir Walter Raleigh’s expeditions to North America. Elizabeth’s long reign, during which she became known as the “Virgin Queen” for her refusal to marry and compromise her authority, coincided with the flowering of the English Renaissance, producing luminaries like William Shakespeare. By her death in 1603, England had emerged as a major world power, and Elizabeth I was enshrined as one of the greatest monarchs in English history.
